Knowledge

The legend of a mother wolf nursing a child in La Louvière is reminiscent of the mythical birth of Rome, and sounds dope! However, the true origin of the city dates from the 12th century, when this forested territory was named Menaulu, from the Old French meaning “wolf’s lair”, and presumably wolf-infested. By 1284, the name of the territory had been translated into Latin, and then back into French to its current name of La Louvière, recognized as an independent city in 1869.

Humans historically have had a complex and varied point of views on wolves. In many parts of the world, wolves have been feared and held in hostility, while in others they arerespected and admired. Wolves are usually apprehensive, how they react toward people generally depends on prior experiences rather than inherent behaviors. When they have sufficient food, habitat and are not being hunted, wolves will usually try to avoid contact with humans. Though potentially dangerous, unprovoked attacks are rare, and wolves have been kept as friendly companionson occasion, yet not without difficulty.
